While you could pin down Cosmo Yuki as the closest thing to the show's main character, being the character who is most prominently featured in the opening and fills the traditional role of the young boy pilot, the entire cast of. While the intro of the show seems hopeful and poppy as any other mecha anime of the time, you can get a real sense of the underlying themes in the show, which become even more apparent at the end of each episode with the show's ending.ĭue to the nature of how, Ideon has a very expansive cast of characters. While some last more than others, in the end, nobody is really spared from this harsh reality. While other animes of the time (and even since) treated character deaths as a major deal, Ideon makes it clear that death can come for any character at any time. While you would easily confuse the setup and overall trajectory of the show with 1982's Macross (which actually shared some crew and helped to cement the Itano Circus barrage of missiles that started with Ideon), these shows couldn't be any different. What starts as a hopeful encounter between two distinct pockets of humanity from far flung reaches of the universe quickly devolves into a desperate chase throughout the universe. If you thought Gundam was dark in its outlook, Ideon is downright bleak in the end.
